Aim

The aim of this institute is to deepen participants’ understanding of ‘meaningful integration’ of Service Learning into a current unit and to consider strategies for integration of Service Learning into the current curriculum.
Participants will discuss various methods for assessment of Service Learning tasks and reflection (methods: formative and summative) and consider the importance of a balance of opportunities for Service Learning across the school’s Service Learning program (PreK-12)
Additionally, participants will observe Service Learning in action!

Learning Outcomes

  • As a result of participating in this institute, you can expect to be able to integrate Service Learning meaningfully into unit planning and create assessments for service learning. To do this we will provide understanding, knowledge, tools, and resources for Service Learning in curriculum unit integration for schools to effectively implement service learning in the current curriculum. Participants can expect to achieve the following outcomes:
    • Using prior knowledge of Service Learning to develop understandings and best practice and using the Service Learning Standards and Benchmarks to intentionally integrate Service Learning into the curriculum
    • Building understanding of assessment and linking assessments in Service Learning units to subject-specific assessment criteria
    • Exploring specific Service Learning subjects (Global Citizens/Issues and Social Entrepreneurship) as courses for international schools for Service Learning integration
    • An understanding of the POPs Framework and ability to apply this to a specific context (their school and community).
